Matheran, mumbai's nearest and famous hill station was discovered by
Mr. Hugh Poyntz Malet
in 1850. It is located at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level.
Situated in the Sahyadri mountain ranges, matheran offers a cool and pleasant climate all throughout the year.
Motor vehicles are not permitted inside matheran, thus one can enjoy clean fresh air. While cars are only allowed till the dasturi car parking you may take a rickshaw(pulled by humans), horses or you may walk upwards to matheran through the dense green forests.
Matheran boasts of the "Toy Train" here. The two hour toy train journey is exciting and takes you on a fantasy ride through the hills of matheran. Passing along the curvy rail tracks and few tunnels this train journey is surely a memorable experience..
The valleys and hill points here are truly photogenic. There is a market at Matheran famous for leather goods and articles of cane. Sweet Chikki is also available.
Matheran is one the few cleanest hill stations in India and we would like to plead the toursists coming here to " KEEP MATHERAN CLEAN AND GREEN".
Although being a small hill station, Matheran has enough hotels to accomodate a large number of tourists flocking here each year. Many international tourists can be seen wandering here on horse backs.
Places to eat :
There are a lot of places to eat out, here in Matheran. All types of food stuff - veg and non veg are available for the hungry stomachs.
